History

Key moments from idea to licence
MilestoneRegulation
  1. 2013

    An idea born of frustration

Nikola Škorić, an engineer with a degree in cryptography from FER (University of Zagreb) who was working in the nuclear industry, tries to buy HRK 100 worth of bitcoin. The process in Croatia is slow and expensive, with margins of around 20%.91012

  2. 2014

    The company is founded

Škorić and his partner Marin Maržić register Electrocoin d.o.o. on 3 February 2014. Škorić wrote to every regulator, including the Croatian National Bank (HNB), to say he was launching a crypto company, but received no reply.72411

  3. 2015

    Expansion into the EU market

The online exchange, operating as bitcoin-mjenjacnica.hr, starts serving clients from across the European Union.9

  4. 2017

    Going full-time

During the 2017 crypto boom, Škorić leaves his job at the nuclear power plant. The company has seven employees at this point.10

  5. 2018

PayCek and €30 million in turnover

The company develops its own crypto payment processor, PayCek, sets up a sales team and records turnover of almost €30 million, with quarterly growth of 100%.111424

  6. 2019

    Croatian Post (Hrvatska pošta)

Following a pilot project in Zadar, from 9 December 2019 cryptocurrencies can be exchanged for cash at 55 post offices in every county.17

  7. 2020

    Anti-money laundering obligations

From 1 January 2020, Electrocoin is a regulated entity under the Anti-Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing Act. Turnover that year reaches HRK 330 million.9

  8. 2021

    Tifon and Konzum

Crypto payments are introduced at 46 Tifon filling stations (February) and in Konzum's online shop (December), the first retail chain in Croatia to offer the option. The company's turnover reaches about HRK 600 million (€79.6m).151651

  9. 2022

400 merchants and the first insurer

More than 400 merchants in Croatia accept crypto at over 2,000 POS terminals. LAQO, the digital brand of Croatia osiguranje, lets customers pay for policies in crypto via PayCek.2419

  10. 2023

    Money Motion

Škorić launches and runs the Money Motion fintech conference in Zagreb, which attracts more than 2,500 visitors in 2025.23

  11. 2024

    Educating the public sector

Electrocoin trains civil servants on crypto-assets and blockchain.13

  12. 2026

    Croatia's first MiCA licence

On 9 April 2026, the HANFA Board authorises Electrocoin to operate as a crypto-asset service provider (CASP). The company is the first entry in the register and offers its services under its MiCA business licence in 30 EEA countries, including France from May 2026.156

Turnover over the years

€ millions, value of assets exchanged (gross)
Reported (Fina or media)Estimate

Estimates: 2014 is derived from Bloomberg's report that revenue grew 932-fold up to 201769. For 2023–2025 the company only reports its earnings, so I estimate turnover assuming it keeps about 2% of turnover (margin of 1–2%, PayCek fee of 2–2.5%)5670. Cross-check: according to HANFA, all Croatian crypto exchanges together turned over €10.9m and €12.4m in January and February 202471, about €130–150m a year, so Electrocoin at an estimated ~€65m would hold about half the market. Up to 2022, turnover equals gross revenue because revenue included the value of crypto sold. Kuna converted at 7.5345. Sources: 68, 69, 52, 51, 54, 7.

Revenue over the years

Company earnings (net), € millions
Official (FINA)Estimate from turnover

Until 2022, only gross revenue was published, which includes the value of cryptocurrency sold. To make those years comparable with the official figures from 2023 onwards, I show them as an estimate: 2% of gross revenue, in line with PayCek's fee of 2–2.5%. This is my assumption, not company data.

From the official financial statements7. Revenue in the statements is far lower than turnover because, as I infer, it includes only the company's earnings and not the value of the assets exchanged.
